Here is an overview of what we learned this week, and what the week ahead holds!
English Language Arts (ELA)
This week we continued working with Unit 2. Our focus this week was using context clues within writing to help us find the meaning of unknown words. We also continued working on inferencing and comparing and contrasting characters from different stories. We had a quiz on Friday that reviewed all of these skills.

Math
This was our 5th week of Unit 1, and it focused on subtraction. We worked on subtraction without regrouping, subtraction with regrouping, subtraction with regrouping and zeroes , and using the "Take a Penny" strategy. We had a quiz on Friday covering all of these areas. Next week will be our final week of Unit 1. We will be reviewing all areas of the unit, and giving the district post-assessment on Thursday or Friday.

Social Studies
We started our next chapter on the First Californians. We learned how scientists believe the first Californians arrived in what is now California, and how they survived. Next week we will start to learn about the specific Indian tribes that lived in California, and students will be working in small "expert groups" to learn more specific information about some of the tribes and regions they lived in.

Technology
Students also worked on Lexia, TenMarks, and Dreambox at different times throughout the week. Students also started to work on a new site called NewsELA. They can read short articles on current topics. They are able to choose their Lexile level, and the article will reformat to be written in a way that they are able to understand based on their level. They then answer questions during the reading, and take a small quiz at the end. It's a great website for them to practice their reading comprehension skills, as well as writing.
