Here is an overview of what we learned this week, and what the week ahead holds!
English Language Arts (ELA)
Our second week of Unit 1 is in the books! This week we continued to use key details to support the main idea of a text. We also started to write an informative essay. In 4th grade, students are expected to write a 3-5 paragraph essay. In our small groups, each group started a new reading group book that relates to Unit 1 of the ELA that we are working on. They were expected to read the first half of the book this week (approx. 12 pages), and complete the book next week. We will meet to discuss the reading, and answer questions.

Math
We continued our work with Unit 1 this week. Our focus this week was learning that each place value was 10 times greater as you move to the left. For example, the tens place is 10 times greater than the ones place. The hundreds place is 10 times greater than the tens place. And so on. We also reviewed writing numbers in standard form, word form, and expanded form, as well as comparing numbers using place value. We had a quiz on Friday that will be sent home next week for your review.

Social Studies
We continued working on our unit about California. We started to learn about California's four natural regions (coastal, mountain, central valley, and desert), and how each of the those regions affect the state. We also started a small project where students were creating a "flip book" with information and illustrations about each of the four regions.

Technology
Students also worked on Lexia, TenMarks, and Dreambox at different times throughout the week. Some also started to type their writing on Google Docs.
